Ten state-owned airports certified to EU standards

Ten 10 state-owned airports have been certified according to the standards of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), a milestone that “constitutes an important step towards strengthening aviation safety and improving the quality of services to passengers and airlines,” according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

EU regulations stipulate that all airports serving commercial flights and having an instrument runway length of more than 800 meters must comply with EASA certification standards.

Ten of the 25 airports managed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) fall into that category, namely Iraklio, Alexandroupoli, Syros, Milos, Ioannina, Kythira, Sitia, Chios, Karpathos and Limnos.

Over the last 12 months, the CAA and the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority collaborated in the gradual certification of the airports.

In a visit to the CAA to mark the announcement of the certification, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras said his ministry’s “priority is to strengthen transport safety.

“The completion of the certification of ten airports, which should have been done many years ago, confirms this. A certification that covers the entire infrastructure, the procedures for smooth and safe operation, as well as the structure of a modern airport services provider.”
