The polls to elect a new leader of main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance were held between 8:00 in the morning and 21:00 on Sunday. The chairman of the Central Electoral Committee Yiannis Drosos announced the extension of the polling by one hour, saying this was considered necessary due to the very high rate of participation.
According to figures given by Drosos, roughly 130,500 people had voted by 19:30, in addition to 1,100 people that voted from abroad. Another 35,000 were new members that registered on the day in order to vote.
He said that the first results should not be expected before 23:00 on Sunday night.
The party's polls were originally scheduled to close at 20:00.
There are five candidates contending for the leadership role in the party, including former SYRIZA ministers Effie Achtsioglou, Nikos Pappas and Euclid Tsakalotos, former PASOK veteran Stefanos Tzoumakas and relative newcomer Stefanos Kasselakis. If a second round of elections is needed based on the results, this will take place on September 24.
