Temperatures set to drop across Greece as rain and strong northerly winds expected
A noticeable cooling trend is forecast across Greece, with local showers, strong northerly winds and morning fog in several areas. Conditions are expected to improve over the weekend, with favourable weather forecast for the Athens Marathon on Sunday.
Greece is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures over the coming days, as northerly winds bring colder conditions, local rainfall and increased cloud cover across several regions.
According to Greek meteorologist Giorgos Emmanouil, speaking on public broadcaster ERT, showers are expected on Friday across Macedonia, Thessaly, central and eastern mainland Greece, Evia, the Peloponnese and Crete. Rainfall is not expected to be particularly heavy, while other parts of the country will experience occasional cloud cover.
Northerly winds will reach up to four Beaufort in the Ionian Sea and seven Beaufort in the Aegean. Temperatures will fall noticeably, particularly in northern Greece.
Maximum temperatures are expected to remain around 15°C in eastern mainland Greece, while other mainland areas will reach 18–20°C. Temperatures in the southern Aegean islands are forecast to reach 21–22°C.
ATHENS AND THESSALONIKI TO EXPERIENCE COOLER WEATHER
In the Attica region, including Athens, partly cloudy skies and occasional light showers are expected, particularly in northern and eastern areas. Northerly winds will prevail, reaching up to seven Beaufort in the South Evian Gulf. Temperatures in Athens are expected to reach 18°C around midday.
Thessaloniki will experience colder conditions, with temperatures not expected to exceed 15°C. Occasional light showers are also forecast, while morning and evening temperatures could fall into single digits in some areas.
FURTHER TEMPERATURE DROP EXPECTED ON FRIDAY
Similar weather conditions are forecast for Friday, with local showers expected across eastern and southern mainland Greece and Crete.
Elsewhere, partly cloudy skies and occasional sunny intervals will prevail. Strong northerly winds will continue across the Aegean, reaching up to seven Beaufort, while temperatures are expected to fall slightly further.
SUNSHINE TO RETURN OVER THE WEEKEND
Weather conditions are expected to improve on Saturday and Sunday, with longer sunny periods and fewer showers across most of the country.
Saturday will generally bring clearer skies, although isolated showers may persist in some areas. Northerly winds will remain strong in the Aegean, reaching up to seven Beaufort, while temperatures will stay below seasonal averages.
On Sunday, occasional showers are mainly expected in the Ionian Sea and western Greece, with relatively clear conditions elsewhere. In Attica, temperatures are forecast to reach 16–17°C.
FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS EXPECTED FOR ATHENS MARATHON
Sunday's weather is also expected to provide favourable conditions for participants in the Athens Marathon.
According to Emmanouil, the absence of significant rainfall and relatively cool temperatures should create suitable conditions for runners. Cooler weather is generally preferable for marathon participants, as high temperatures can increase physical strain during long-distance races.
Overall, Greece is expected to experience a colder and windier spell before conditions gradually improve over the weekend, bringing more sunshine and limited rainfall to most regions.
