Security cameras: 1,000 coming to the streets of Athens – What will apply
"The goal is not to fine people. The goal is to ensure that if we attempt to run a red light, the camera will record us, and the fine will be issued immediately," said the Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, speaking on ERTNews and the NEWSROOM show on Friday (September 27).
He explained, "The purpose is for the fine to be confirmed at the moment we run the red light, and within a very short time, we will know that the fine has been issued, and we will be called to pay it quickly."
The minister emphasized that fines cannot be issued today and paid ten years later. "This information system, in collaboration with the Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Ministry of Transportation, is being rebuilt from scratch, very quickly and efficiently, so that citizens understand they are being monitored for critical and often fatal violations," he added.
