73-year-old man dies after prolonged power outage on Thassos
A 73-year-old man from Skala Potamias on the Greek island of Thassos died at Kavala Hospital after a prolonged power outage reportedly left him without an adequate oxygen supply for several hours, according to reports by local media citing his family.
The man, who had chronic health conditions, had been managing his condition with oxygen support before the outage disrupted the electricity supply across the island. He was subsequently transferred for emergency medical care.
FAMILY SAYS BACKUP OXYGEN RAN OUT
According to the family's account, the patient's backup oxygen cylinder ran out at around 6 a.m., leaving him without his usual oxygen support for a critical period.
He was first taken to the Prinos Health Centre before being transferred to the Pulmonology Clinic at Kavala Hospital.
The family said the prolonged blackout had created a life-threatening situation for the patient, whose condition had previously been managed with oxygen assistance.
OXYGEN DEPRIVATION REPORTEDLY AFFECTED HIS HEART
According to information reportedly provided by doctors to the family, the interruption to his regular oxygen supply led to low oxygen saturation and a drop in blood pressure, placing additional strain on his heart.
The man later died at Kavala Hospital.
The circumstances described in the reports highlight the risks that extended power cuts can pose to people who depend on electrically powered medical equipment or uninterrupted access to oxygen supplies. However, the precise medical cause of death and the extent to which the power outage contributed would require confirmation from the relevant medical authorities.
