Seafarers on strike in Greece for the death of a teenager pushed overboard by the crew

In Greece, the Panhellenic Federation of Seafarers has decided on a 24-hour strike to show support for the family of a young man who was pushed to his death by the crew while trying to board a ferry to Crete departing from the port of Piraeus last week.
In a statement made by the Panhellenic Seafarers' Federation (PNO), it was stated that they wanted to send a message of support to the family of 36-year-old Andonis Karyotis and drew attention to the lack of infrastructure and personnel in the ports.
In an application to the Piraeus Prosecutor's Office, the initiative "Zero Tolerance", which aims to combat discrimination against disabled people, asked for an investigation into whether there was an element of racism against disabled people in the incident. In a statement released by the initiative, it was claimed that Karyotis' mental disability was also effective in the incident. Due to the strike, all scheduled ships across the country will remain moored in ports throughout the day.
Last week, Karyotis, who was trying to board the ferry to Crete, was pushed by the crew for unknown reasons and Karyotis fell into the sea and died.
Some of the eyewitnesses who spoke to the Greek press claimed that Karyotis did not have a ticket, others that he did not want to be taken on the ferry because he arrived late.
Security camera footage of the incident was shared on social media and 4 members of the ship's crew, including the captain, were detained.
