Parliament lifts immunity of Avgenakis, Papadopoulos
The Greek Parliament voted on Wednesday to lift the immunity of two MPs—Lefteris Avgenakis of New Democracy and Independent MP Nikos Papadopoulos—over separate incidents.
Avgenakis faces legal proceedings following a July 2024 altercation with an airport staff member at Athens International Airport. The Parliament’s Ethics Committee recommended lifting his immunity, a move Avgenakis himself requested. Of 272 deputies present, 271 voted in favor.
Papadopoulos, a former Niki party MP, is linked to the vandalism of an exhibit at the National Gallery in March 2025. He defended his actions as protecting the Constitution and Orthodox faith. Parliament voted 254–8 to lift his immunity, following the Ethics Committee’s recommendation.
Both cases will now proceed to judicial authorities for investigation.
