Greece continues to record one of the lowest levels of media trust worldwide, according to the 2025 Digital News Report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

Only 22% of Greek citizens say they trust the national news media, a percentage that ranks among the lowest globally and is nearly identical to that of Hungary. The report highlights a deep and multifaceted crisis of credibility in Greek journalism.

Experts attribute the low trust levels to long-standing structural issues within the Greek media landscape, including:

  • Partisan affiliations,
  • Dependence on advertising interests,
  • Lack of quality control, and
  • Numerous allegations of censorship and bias.

The report also reveals a significant trend of news avoidance: more than 6 in 10 Greeks admit they frequently or occasionally avoid consuming news. This phenomenon, known as “selective disengagement,” is linked to:

  • Saturation from negative content,
  • Fatigue from constant political conflict, and
  • Growing cynicism regarding the truthfulness of news coverage.

In parallel, 64% of Greeks report that they now consume news primarily through platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. This shift marks a transformation in the way information is delivered—moving away from professionally curated journalism and toward algorithm-driven visual content produced by influencers and, in many cases, non-journalists.

The findings raise concerns about the future of informed citizenship and the role of journalism in public life, particularly in an era where media literacy and source credibility are under growing scrutiny.
