Regional newspapers: The only media Greeks still trust
While Greece records the lowest level of media trust among 48 surveyed countries, regional newspapers stand out as a beacon of credibility and seriousness, according to the annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report.
Local print media—such as Agonas—remain by far the most trusted and respected news sources for Greeks. The study shows that regional newspapers outperform national Athens-based outlets in both readership and trust, making them perhaps the “last bastion” of reliable journalism. Notably, trust in national media has reached a historic 14-year low.
Among newspapers that Greeks consult at least once per week, local newspapers lead with 17%, followed by Real News, Proto Thema, and To Vima at 10%, Kathimerini at 9%, and Ta Nea at 8%.
When it comes to trust, regional newspapers dominate again, earning a 49% trust rating—the highest in the country by a wide margin.
Key findings from the report include:
- A steep decline in trust across all measured media, including public broadcaster ERT (-11 percentage points).
- SKAI, a pro-government commercial broadcaster, also saw a significant trust drop (-10 points).
- Social media remains the most-used news source among Greeks online (64%). YouTube (30%), Instagram (21%), and TikTok (17%) are increasingly popular, especially among younger audiences.
- Greece ranks 89th out of 180 countries in the RSF World Press Freedom Index, highlighting broader concerns about media freedom in the country.
