Ombudsman flags school infrastructure failings

The Greek Ombudsman has flagged severe shortcomings in school infrastructure, warning many facilities are unsuitable or unsafe. Despite earlier warnings in 2021 and 2022, issues remain unresolved, exacerbated by recent school mergers. Students at artistic and music schools face acute challenges, such as flooded classrooms and inadequate spaces, with some lessons held in corridors or courtyards.

In Markopoulo, primary school pupils have used temporary containers since 2010 while awaiting new construction. Escalating costs and failed tenders have delayed a planned eco-friendly school project, despite securing partial funding.

The Ombudsman’s report, sent to the ministries of Education, Infrastructure, and Interior, urges compliance with updated standards for space and capacity, last revised in 2008. The report notes incomplete suitability evaluations for existing schools and a lack of permanent buildings for many established decades ago.
