No clear challenger as 2027 election picture takes shape
If Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sticks to his timetable, Greece’s next general election is expected around April 2027. With more than a year to go and no close contest between the two leading parties, firm predictions remain premature.
Opposition parties argue that the ruling New Democracy may struggle to secure an outright majority. Party officials respond that polls at a similar stage before the 2023 vote underestimated their support.
In February 2022, surveys placed New Democracy at around 31–32%. In the May 2023 election, held under simple proportional representation, the party won 40.79% before later securing a parliamentary majority. Polling for SYRIZA, led at the time by Alexis Tsipras, proved largely accurate, while PASOK was slightly overestimated.
Current polls show New Democracy at 24–25%, still in first place but significantly lower than in 2022. Fragmentation in the center-left and the presence of figures such as Maria Karystianou add uncertainty, while signals from former premier Antonis Samaras could also influence voter dynamics.
For now, Greece’s political landscape remains fluid, making any clear electoral forecast difficult.
