New Left Party demands arms embargo, diplomatic sanctions against Israel

In a statement, Alexis Haritsis, leader of the New Left Party’s parliamentary group, emphasized the urgent need for arms, economic, and diplomatic sanctions to be imposed on Israel. He accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of not only opening a second front in Lebanon but also seeking to provoke an open war with Iran, which he warned could escalate into a wider regional conflict.

Haritsis, in his social media post, stated: "An embargo and sanctions against Israel must be implemented now to stop the destruction in the Middle East."

He further urged the Greek government to immediately cease all forms of cooperation with Israel and to take the lead in peace initiatives at the European level. "As the European Union country most affected by the Middle East conflicts, Greece must take responsibility," he added.

Haritsis also criticized Netanyahu's speech at the United Nations General Assembly, accusing the Israeli leader of justifying attacks on civilians and ignoring the plight of the Palestinian people.

Pointing to the support given to Israel’s far-right government by the U.S. and the EU, Haritsis argued that this backing has only led to increased violence in the region. He concluded by calling on the international community to raise its voice against war and occupation, stating, "The issue of peace is a matter for the people. We must stand up against war and defend our humanity."
