51.1% support continued Greece-Israel military cooperation, MRB poll finds
A slim majority of respondents in a new MRB poll support the continuation of military cooperation between Greece and Israel, while 30.3% say Athens should take Türkiye’s reactions into account to avoid regional tensions.
The findings come from the second part of an MRB public opinion survey conducted for OPEN, which examined attitudes toward Greece’s strategic relationship with Israel, relations with Türkiye, marine parks and the planned electricity interconnection between Greece and Cyprus.
According to the survey, 51.1% of respondents believe military cooperation with Israel should continue because they consider it to strengthen Greece’s defense. Within this group, 31.8% said cooperation should “definitely” continue, while 19.3% said it “probably” should.
By comparison, 30.3% said Türkiye’s reactions should be taken into account in order to prevent tensions. This included 18% who “probably” supported such an approach and 12.3% who “definitely” supported it. A further 18.6% responded “don’t know/no answer.”
PARTY VOTER DIFFERENCES
The survey also recorded substantial differences between voters of different political parties.
Support for continuing military cooperation with Israel stood at 78.5% among New Democracy voters, 76.6% among Greek Solution voters, 64.1% among Hope for Democracy voters and 56.7% among PASOK voters.
The corresponding figures were 39.5% among ELAS voters, 25.9% among Course of Freedom voters and 23.9% among KKE voters. Among Course of Freedom voters, 48.2% said Türkiye’s reactions should be taken into account to avoid tensions, compared with 41.7% among KKE voters.
These figures describe differences within the poll’s party-voter groups and should not be interpreted as representing the entire electorate of each party.
MARINE PARKS AND CYPRUS POWER LINK
The survey found a higher level of support for proceeding with Greece’s plans for marine parks and the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection despite objections from Türkiye.
Overall, 59.3% said the projects should proceed as planned despite Türkiye’s reactions. Of these respondents, 36.2% said they “definitely” supported proceeding, while 23.1% said they “probably” supported it.
Meanwhile, 30.6% favored a more conciliatory approach toward Türkiye on the projects, while 10.1% did not express an opinion.
The MRB findings therefore show a narrow majority supporting continued Greece-Israel military cooperation, alongside a sizeable share of respondents who favor taking Türkiye’s reactions into account or did not express a view. The same survey recorded stronger support for proceeding with the marine park and Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection plans.
