New hospital appointment system in Greece from October 1
A new system for booking hospital appointments will come into effect in Greece on October 1, Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous announced in an interview with ERTNews.
According to the deputy minister, the reform has two key objectives: to make the system more user-friendly and to provide a greater number of available appointments. More than 1 million additional slots are expected to be offered annually.
All hospital appointments will be integrated into a single digital platform, accessible either online or by phone via the 1566 hotline.
The process will work similarly to the vaccination booking system:
- Citizens will enter the medical specialty they are seeking (e.g., endocrinologist) and their location.
- The platform will display all available appointments at nearby hospitals (e.g., Evangelismos, Gennimatas).
- Users will then choose the time and place that suits them best.
For security reasons, the system will be linked to each citizen’s social security number (AMKA) to prevent misuse or double bookings.
