MP Nikos Vrettos expelled from Niki party over ethics violation
In an official statement issued by the party, Vrettos was referred to the Ethics Committee after acting “arbitrarily” by supporting a proposal put forward by ruling party New Democracy. The proposal concerned the appointment of the chairperson of a parliamentary inquiry into the OPEKEPE scandal — a matter currently under investigation.
The party leadership considered his actions a breach of internal rules and party unity. “Such individual initiatives, especially on critical issues, undermine the cohesion and credibility of the party,” the statement read.
This is the second expulsion from Niki in recent months. On May 5, MP Nikos Papadopoulos was removed from the party ranks after he was allegedly involved in an act of vandalism at the National Gallery on March 10.
The Niki party had secured ten seats in the June 2023 general elections. With the expulsions of Vrettos and Papadopoulos, the party now holds eight seats in Parliament.
