Moderate earthquake strikes eastern Mediterranean, no damage reported
A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit the eastern Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday evening, Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported.
The quake occurred at 8:11 p.m. local time at a depth of about 38 kilometers, with its epicenter in the eastern Mediterranean. No damage or casualties have been reported.
Seismologists described the event as moderate, noting that while quakes at this depth can be felt, they are unlikely to cause significant damage.
4.5 magnitude earthquake in Crete
Earlier on Wednesday, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Crete, southwest of Kithira, according to Greece’s Geodynamic Institute. The tremor occurred at a depth of around 63 kilometers, with no reported damage or injuries.
Both earthquakes occurred offshore and posed no immediate threat to nearby populations.
