Ministry issues tight rules for fire season

The Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry has launched the 2026 wildfire prevention season, warning members of the public of four key prohibitions aimed at reducing human-caused fires.

Burning vegetation waste and open fires are banned outright regardless of risk level. Spark-producing or open-flame work, fireworks and beekeeping smoke are prohibited when the danger index reaches high, very high, or alarm levels.

Violations carry administrative fines up to €50,000. Under the new Penal Code, arson is punishable by imprisonment and fines up to €200,000, with no suspension or commutation. “Prevention is everyone’s obligation,” the ministry stated.

Fire service issues nationwide warning

With the start of the fire prevention season on May 1, the Hellenic Fire Service has issued a strong warning, stressing that wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense due to the climate crisis.

Authorities emphasize that prevention is critical, and public cooperation is essential to reduce risks and protect lives, property and the environment.

Rising risk and legal obligations

In recent years, both the frequency and severity of wildfires have increased. In response, Greece has introduced specific regulations, including mandatory clearing of plots and restrictions on high-risk activities during the summer months.

What to do if you spot a fire

If you see smoke or flames:

Call emergency numbers 199 or 112 immediately

Provide clear details about the location, direction and conditions

Do not assume someone else has already reported it

Move away from the area and assist emergency access

Prevention at home and outdoors

Citizens are urged to avoid:

Burning garbage or dry vegetation

Lighting barbecues in forests or dry areas

Using tools that create sparks

Discarding lit cigarettes

For homes near forests, creating a fire safety zone, clearing dry vegetation and removing flammable materials are strongly recommended.

If the fire approaches

Stay calm

Close windows, doors and openings to block embers

Remove flammable items from around the house

Ensure access for fire crews

If authorities order an evacuation, follow instructions strictly.

Key Message: Prevention saves lives

The Hellenic Fire Service highlights that wildfire protection is a shared responsibility.

"Fire is not a spectacle," the statement warns, urging everyone to stay informed, prepared and committed to protecting Greece’s forests.
