Greece launches new diesel fuel subsidy

The Greek government has introduced a new diesel fuel subsidy program aimed at easing the burden of rising fuel prices on households and professional users, with the measure taking effect on Aug. 1 and remaining in force through Aug. 31.

Under the new scheme, the state will provide an additional subsidy of €0.10 per liter of diesel. The support will be applied alongside an existing €0.05-per-liter discount introduced on July 14 under an agreement between the government and oil refineries, bringing the total price reduction for consumers to €0.15 per liter.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the latest subsidy package is expected to cost the state budget approximately €29 million.

The government said the measure is intended to mitigate the impact of elevated fuel prices on households as well as professionals operating in the transport sector and other industries.

Meanwhile, data from the Greek Fuel Price Observatory show that the average retail price of diesel in Greece is approaching €2 per liter, while unleaded gasoline is currently priced between €2.05 and €2.06 per liter.

Officials expect the temporary subsidy to provide relief to consumers facing persistently high fuel costs.
