Young Chilean tourist dies after falling into ravine near Greek-Albanian border
The incident occurred on Monday near the border area of Mavromati, where the young man was reportedly trekking from Albania into Greece with a 22-year-old companion.
According to police sources, the tourist fell into the ravine for reasons that remain under investigation. His companion sought assistance by flagging down a passing vehicle, which alerted emergency services.
Firefighters from the Igoumenitsa and Filiata Fire Brigades carried out a recovery operation in the difficult-to-access terrain before retrieving the victim's body.
The surviving companion, who witnessed the operation, told firefighters through tears that the pair had decided to walk from Albania to Greece because they had run out of money.
An ambulance from Greece's National Emergency Centre (EKAV) transported the body to the University Hospital of Ioannina, where medical authorities confirmed the victim's death.
Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
