Millions of tenants to receive rent support: Who qualifies, when payments will be made, and how much they will get
More than one million tenants in Greece will receive one month’s rent under the state rent support scheme, with payments scheduled to be deposited on Friday, November 28. The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has completed the process of matching tax declarations with electronic rental contracts.
Application Requirement
Tenants who meet the income and asset criteria but have not yet received payment must submit an application via the myAADE platform by December 31, 2025. Those who fail to apply will not receive the support.
How Much Support Will Be Provided?
For primary residences: up to €800, plus an additional €50 per child.
For student housing: up to €800 per student will be reimbursed.
Situations That Block Payment
Some tenants will not receive the support if they fail to meet the eligibility criteria. These cases include:
- Not meeting the student housing requirements
- Multiple students listed on a rental contract without meeting legal conditions
- Mismatches between declared rental amounts and the rental contract
In such situations, tenants must submit correction requests along with bank payment receipts and the rental agreement.
Income and Asset Limits
Single individuals: annual income up to €20,000
Married couples: annual income up to €28,000
Single-parent families: annual income up to €31,000
Total household assets: must not exceed €120,000
Rent Arrears and False Declarations
Tenants who are behind on rent payments will not receive the full support amount. Payments will be calculated based on the actual rent collected, as declared by the landlord in the E2 tax form, not the amount stated in the contract.
Those who submit false or misleading declarations will face strict penalties: improperly received funds will be reclaimed with interest, and recipients will be banned from state aid programs for three years. Rent support payments are tax-exempt and cannot be seized.
