Political shock in Athens: Allegations of “Israeli support for New Democracy” raised in Parliament
SYRIZA Member of Parliament Olga Gerovasili submitted a parliamentary question after Israeli media reports claimed that Israel had supported the ruling party’s electoral success. In a written statement, Gerovasili drew attention to serious allegations published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, urging Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to provide a public explanation.
According to the reports, an individual closely associated with Israeli President Isaac Herzog allegedly played a role in supporting online opinion-shaping efforts in favor of the New Democracy Party ahead of the 2023 elections.
Gerovasili noted that Israeli media suggested this alleged cooperation dates back to late 2022, a period when Greece was shaken by the wiretapping scandal involving surveillance of politicians, journalists, and public figures.
In her oral question submitted to Parliament, the SYRIZA lawmaker directly asked Prime Minister Mitsotakis:
“Did the New Democracy Party, before the 2023 general elections and following the wiretapping scandal, engage in cooperation with a close associate of the Israeli President aimed at influencing public opinion through digital means?”
The allegations have fueled renewed debate over foreign involvement, digital influence, and transparency in democratic processes, while government officials have yet to issue a detailed response.
