Is it illegal to keep coffee or water in the car under the new traffic law?

In recent days, social media posts have claimed that drivers in Türkiye could be fined for drinking coffee, keeping water bottles, or wearing thick coats while driving. These claims quickly spread online, prompting the Ministry of Transport to issue an official clarification.

According to the Ministry’s statement, the allegations are completely false. The clarification emphasized that:

  • It is not illegal to have or drink coffee or water inside a vehicle.
  • Drivers will not be fined for wearing a coat or jacket while driving.
  • It is not forbidden to carry shopping bags in the car, though they must be placed in a way that does not obstruct safe driving.

The Ministry reminded the public that no such penalties exist in the current Traffic Law, and the only condition is that the driver maintains full control of the vehicle and adheres to safe driving regulations.

Officials urged citizens not to believe misinformation circulating on social media, stressing that the government will continue to share verified information through official channels.
