Greece’s tax authority sends notices over unpaid 2021 vehicle road tax

Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has begun notifying vehicle owners whose records show outstanding road tax for 2021, giving them an opportunity to correct their vehicle records before the debts and applicable penalties are assessed.

Under AADE’s O.3043/2026 circular, electronic notifications are being sent between September 14 and September 30, 2026, to owners whose vehicles appear to have outstanding 2021 road-tax obligations. The process is intended to allow owners to update inaccurate vehicle information and provide documents proving that the tax was not actually due.

Owners can correct vehicle records through myCAR
The special application on AADE’s myCAR platform is scheduled to open on October 1, 2026. Owners will be able to log in using their Taxisnet credentials and view vehicles associated with outstanding 2021 road-tax amounts.

They will then be able to declare the vehicle’s actual status for the year in question, or subsequent years where relevant, and submit supporting documentation.

Examples include cases in which a vehicle was stolen, deregistered, placed in legal immobilisation or exempt from road tax.

The correction procedure is aimed at vehicles that have been declared in the taxpayer’s E1 tax return. Vehicles belonging to people with disabilities and vehicles registered to deceased persons are excluded from this particular process.

AADE’s myCAR platform already allows vehicle owners to check potential road-tax debts and obtain road-tax documents and certificates.

October 30 deadline for supporting documents
Owners who receive a notification and believe they did not owe the 2021 road tax should submit the relevant declaration and documentation through myCAR by October 30, 2026.

The supporting documents must demonstrate the vehicle’s status and the reason why the road tax was not payable.

For taxpayers who cannot receive the electronic notification, the relevant Tax Offices and the Centre for Taxation and Collection of Large Debts (KEFODE) may notify them by registered letter, according to the AADE circular.

The competent tax services are expected to complete the necessary corrections by November 26, 2026, while AADE is scheduled to complete the electronic assessment of the 2021 road-tax debts by December 3, 2026.

Late submissions remain possible
AADE will continue to accept supporting documentation after the deadlines. However, a late submission does not suspend the assessment process.

If an owner subsequently provides evidence showing that the road tax, the penalty or only the penalty was not owed, the competent tax service will examine the documents.

From October 31 onward, late declarations must be submitted through the “My Requests” service rather than the myCAR application.

Owners who are ultimately assessed for road tax and penalties also retain the right to challenge the assessment before the competent administrative courts under Greece’s Code of Administrative Procedure.
