Greek opposition criticizes postponement of Mitsotakis–Erdoğan meeting

Greek opposition parties sharply criticized the postponement of the planned meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, warning that the delay undermines Greece’s foreign policy and sends the wrong signal regarding national interests.

PASOK spokesperson Dimitris Mantzos argued that the fact the meeting was postponed at Türkiye’s request sent negative signals for bilateral relations and the fragile balance in the Eastern Mediterranean. He claimed that such developments weaken Greece’s ability to use diplomatic pressure in defense of its sovereignty. Mantzos emphasized that the meeting should still take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, provided it is not canceled altogether, otherwise it would become clear that Turkey approaches dialogue solely on its own terms.

The left-wing SYRIZA party also criticized the government, saying the postponement once again highlighted the lack of foresight and strategic foundation in its foreign policy. Party officials argued that over the past six years, Greece has projected a more passive and accommodating stance internationally, often conceding ground to Turkey on sovereignty issues. They accused the government of being late in defending international law and national interests, which they said prevents Greece from asserting a stronger voice in foreign affairs.
