Greece’s tax authority reports key sectors and regions leading in tax evasion

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has revealed the results of extensive inspections carried out across Greece between May and September 2025, targeting both mainland and island regions with a focus on popular summer destinations.

According to AADE, the highest rates of tax non-compliance were recorded in the following regions:

  • Western Greece: Aetolia-Acarnania (42.07%), Ilia (47.22%), Achaia (43.61%)
  • Central Greece
  • Peloponnese
  • Crete
  • South Aegean

Conversely, lower rates of violations were observed in Northern Aegean, Eastern Macedonia–Thrace, and Western Macedonia.

The inspections covered multiple sectors, with the tourism and hospitality industries accounting for a significant portion. AADE identified major violations in restaurants, cafes, and beach services, with some operations failing to properly transmit receipts to the electronic system.

As a result of these inspections, AADE imposed fines and temporary closures on over 300 businesses. Additionally, 202 cases of non-compliant point-of-sale (POS) systems were discovered, resulting in fines totaling €2.59 million.

Notable examples include a restaurant in Heraklion, Crete, which failed to transmit 18,515 receipts totaling €275,000, leading to a fine and a four-day closure, and a carpentry business in Paros, fined €33,360.85 with a two-day closure for failing to transmit receipts and integrate its POS system.

AADE emphasized that these measures reflect its ongoing commitment to combat tax evasion and promote fair business practices across the country.
