Greece registers 10 deaths from West Nile virus so far this year
Greece has registered a total of 76 domestic cases of the West Nile virus since the start of the season in 2024 to August 14, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on Wednesday.
Of the total, 57 cases exhibited central nervous system symptoms and 19 had mild or no symptoms. Ten of the 76 died, all of them over 60 years of age.
During the past week, 21 new domestic cases were diagnosed and 2 more cases were of individuals who contracted the virus before travelling to Greece.
Regions where the virus has shown up include communities in the regional units of Larissa, Karditsa, Lefkada, Chalkidiki, Pella, Serres, Kilkis, Imathia, Achaia, Thesprotia, the southern sector of Athens, Argolid, Rodopi, and metropolitan Thessaloniki. The emergence of more infections on a nearly annual basis in the last decade indicates that the West Nile virus has established itself in Greece as in other European countries (Austria, Croatia, France, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Serbia, and Spain).
