West Nile virus cases rise to 110 in Greece, with 9 deaths
Greece has recorded a sharp increase in West Nile virus infections, with 45 new locally acquired cases reported over the past week, bringing the total to 110 since the start of the 2026 transmission period, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said.
Most severe cases affect central nervous system
Of the 110 cases, 81 developed serious neurological symptoms. Nine people have died, all aged over 65.
Cases have been detected in 39 municipalities across 14 regional units, mainly in Attica, Thessaly, Central Macedonia and the Peloponnese. Attica has recorded particularly intense virus circulation this year.
Further cases expected
EODY said additional cases are expected in the coming weeks, both in affected areas and elsewhere, noting that the spread of the virus cannot be predicted with certainty.
The health authority urged people across Greece to take personal protection measures against mosquito bites throughout the mosquito season.
