European Commission reported that Greece achieved one of the steepest declines in road fatalities in the European Union in 2025, with deaths from traffic accidents falling by 22 percent — the second-largest reduction among member states.

The decrease significantly outpaced the EU-wide average, which saw road deaths fall by 3 percent over the same period. Only Estonia recorded a greater reduction.

According to the report, Greece also registered the largest annual drop in traffic fatalities in its history, with deaths declining from 665 in 2024 to 517 in 2025.

Authorities attributed the improvement to coordinated efforts across multiple government ministries, enhanced enforcement by the Hellenic Police, and the implementation of stricter traffic regulations.

Infrastructure upgrades also played a role, including the completion of major road projects such as the Patras–Pyrgos highway, aimed at improving safety and reducing accident risks.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas said the findings demonstrate that government policies are yielding measurable results. He described the Commission’s data as encouraging, while cautioning that the number of fatalities remains high.

“The data confirms that we are moving in the right direction,” Dimas said, adding that efforts to enhance road safety will continue with greater intensity to further reduce accidents and protect lives.

The European Commission published the report on Tuesday as part of its ongoing monitoring of road safety trends across the bloc.
