Greece prepares for cold but calm start to new year

Greece is experiencing a chilly start to the week, with temperatures dropping across the country ahead of New Year’s Eve. Despite gusty winds in some areas, meteorologists say widespread snow is unlikely, with snowfall limited to high mountain elevations.

Prominent meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas notes that a stable high-pressure system is keeping storm activity at bay, resulting in mostly dry conditions. Any light precipitation is expected to affect mainly the eastern and southern Aegean islands, including Crete.

“The focus now is on the crisp nighttime temperatures rather than snow or rain,” Kolydas said. “It will be a wintry but calm transition into 2026.”

Residents can expect a refreshing cold spell that offers a true taste of winter, without the disruptions of heavy storms.

Central Macedonia feels the freeze as temperatures drop to -9°C

Northern Greece is experiencing a sharp cold spell, with Central Macedonia recording some of the lowest temperatures. Lailia (Serres) hit -9°C, Nevrokopi -8°C, and Florina and Grevena -7°C.

In Thessaloniki, the morning temperature was 4°C, while the lowest reading in the region was 0°C in Lagadas. Strong winds accompanied the cold, with gusts reaching up to 108 km/h in Thessaloniki, according to Meteo.gr.

Officials have advised residents to stay cautious in the chilly, windy conditions. Despite the cold, the weather offers a true winter experience, especially in high-altitude areas suitable for outdoor activities and winter sports.
