Greece makes statement on Maria Telalian's election to OSCE position with Türkiye's support
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding Maria Telalian's election as the Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) within the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). It highlighted that Telalian's appointment to this important position would enhance the effectiveness of OSCE in protecting human rights, combating discrimination, and strengthening democratic institutions.
ODIHR is an independent body that monitors election processes and recommends legal reforms to enhance democratic standards in member countries. Telalian's unanimous election was seen as a symbolic message that OSCE is regaining its influence, especially at a time when it has faced challenges in reaching consensus.
Türkiye and Greece had agreed to support each other's international candidacies. In this framework, Turkey nominated retired Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioğlu for the OSCE Secretary-General position, while Greece nominated Telalian for the ODIHR Director role.
This cooperation stems from the solidarity shown between the two countries after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake and the train disaster in Greece. Both countries continue to pursue a mutual support policy for international candidacies.
