Dritsas set to take Tsipras’s vacant parliamentary seat for New Left

Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras from Parliament, Theodoros Dritsas from the New Left (Nea Aristera) party is set to take over the vacant seat.
Dritsas, a former minister and ex-member of SYRIZA, had previously left the party to join the New Left. With his swearing-in, the New Left’s representation in Parliament will increase to 12 members, while SYRIZA’s will drop to 25 seats.
In an interview with Efsyn.gr, Dritsas confirmed that he would accept the parliamentary seat and serve as a representative of the New Left.
This development directly affects the balance of power in the Greek Parliament. The fact that the seat vacated by Tsipras—a founding figure of SYRIZA—is being filled by a politician who has since joined a rival left-wing party underscores the growing rivalry between SYRIZA and the New Left.
The move highlights the ongoing fragmentation and restructuring within Greece’s left, as internal divisions continue to reshape the parliamentary landscape.
