Domestic violence complaints and arrests on the rise
Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis has reported a rise in domestic violence complaints and arrests across Greece, highlighting the increased use of protective tools for victims. He made the remarks on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Speaking to ANT1, Chrysochoidis noted that one in three women who file a complaint activates a panic button on their phone, with around 5,000 panic buttons currently deployed nationwide. He added that the police receive roughly 450 complaints per month.
In 2024, authorities compiled 18,500 case files and arrested 11,300 alleged abusers. “In the first ten months of 2025, we already have 19,500 case files and 12,150 arrests, with many offenders in custody. This reflects an increase in complaints, case files, arrests, and pretrial detention,” Chrysochoidis said.
The minister also stressed that protective measures have been strengthened to prevent abusers from approaching victims or their children. Panic button usage has risen by 12% this year, and the 100 emergency hotline received 30,500 calls in 2025, up from 27,000 last year, demonstrating greater reporting and intervention.
