OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioğlu has described diplomacy as the most effective tool for resolving international tensions, stressing that dialogue and cooperation remain essential to strengthening security in an increasingly unstable global environment.
Diplomacy remains the most effective tool for resolving tensions, says OSCE chief

Speaking at The Economist conference titled "Progress in an Age of Turbulence" in Athens, Sinirlioğlu warned that the erosion of the fundamental principles of international law is among the most pressing challenges facing the international community. He said those principles must be applied equally and without exception to all states in order to ensure collective security.

Sinirlioğlu noted that while governments are increasing defense spending, greater investment is also needed in diplomacy and confidence-building measures. Although he acknowledged the rationale behind strengthening military deterrence, he cautioned that an excessive focus on defense could reinforce perceptions of threat and contribute to greater uncertainty.

He also emphasized that security cannot be achieved through military deterrence alone, pointing to rapid advances in artificial intelligence, shortcomings in arms control agreements and regional imbalances as factors that could undermine international stability.

Calling for a stronger European security architecture, the OSCE chief underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and international cooperation, reiterating that diplomacy remains the most effective means of reducing risks and resolving conflicts peacefully.
