Debates on new president intensify

The discussions regarding the presidential election have reignited after the New Year holiday. The uncertainty over whether Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will propose a candidate from the center-left or the right-wing has fueled further debates.

Opposition parties such as PASOK and SYRIZA argue that the Prime Minister should propose a candidate from the center-left. PASOK spokesperson Kostas Choukalas stated in an interview on Mega TV that the presidency should be a symbol of national unity and maintain institutional balance. He said, "Traditionally, it is the role of the ruling party to propose a candidate from the opposing political camp to ensure political balance." He also emphasized that PASOK would not support a candidate who is limited to a narrow party line.

SYRIZA representative Giorgos Karameros argued that the president should not remain silent regarding the decline in the quality of life for the people and the violation of the rule of law. Karameros also said that national unity should not be used as a tool to justify the government's policies.

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) strongly criticized the presidential election discussions. In a statement, the party said, "The presidency is an institutional tool that approves anti-popular government decisions. This discussion is in no way related to the problems of the people." KKE argued that the debates conceal the real concerns of the people and serve to perpetuate the corrupt structure of the political system.
