Chrisochoidis: Law will be enforced if farmers persist with protests

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis warned on Friday that the government would move to enforce the law if farmers continue their mobilisations, stressing that the authorities have already shown considerable tolerance toward the protests.

Speaking in an interview with SKAI television, Chrisochoidis said that while farmers had been given leeway to voice their demands, there were limits to what the state could accept. “When 20 or 30 demands are submitted, it is impossible for all of them to be satisfied,” he said, adding that such compromises are inherent to democracy. He argued that continuing actions that cause serious disruption and economic harm cannot be justified.

“These actions are no longer just an inconvenience; they are creating significant economic damage,” the minister said, emphasising that there could be no excuse for protests that obstruct normal social and economic activity.

Chrisochoidis also highlighted the impact of intensified roadside checks in reducing drunk driving. He noted that violations had dropped from an initial rate of 4–5% to around 1%, alongside a broader shift in public attitudes against driving under the influence. According to the minister, road fatalities fell by 135 in 2025, which he described as a major achievement.

In addition, he referred to ongoing efforts to reduce illegal firearm possession in Crete through voluntary handovers, as well as measures aimed at addressing juvenile delinquency.
