Androulakis: Turkiye cannot be part of the European defense architecture

PASOK-Movement for Change (KINAL) will vote in support of Greece's armaments program and expenditures to improve the country's deterrence force, "but that does not mean that we give a blank check to your choices and handling, much more so when these cost the Greek people," Nikos Androulakis told the government in Parliament on Thursday.
Speaking during the plenary debate on the procurement of a fourth Belharra frigate from France, the main opposition leader was also critical of the government's stance concerning Türkiye.
"Turkiye signs illegal agreements that violate the Law of the Sea and our sovereign rights, and obstructs the installation of the electricity cable connecting Cyprus and Crete," Androulakis said. "Therefore there is no conditionality, but a single reality: that Türkiye cannot be part of the European architecture of defense," he asserted.
Connecting the procurements of the frigates with domestic industry, he underlined that "we give billions out to acquire airplanes and frigates, and Greece does not manufacture a single screw, in order to provide added value to Greek production as well." The PASOK-KINAL leader charged that Greece is "entering an armaments rally, justified to a certain extent, but we are buying [armaments] from abroad and Türkiye produces them through its own industry. Obviously we will review all aspects of implementing these agreements."
