11 injured in major factory fire bear Athens
Eleven people were hospitalized, three of them seriously injured, after a major fire engulfed a factory in Aspropyrgos, western Attica, on Tuesday morning.
According to Greek state broadcaster ERT, the victims suffered burns and smoke inhalation. Two people with severe burns were intubated at Thriasio Hospital, while another critically injured patient was treated at Attikon Hospital before being transferred to KAT Hospital. Several others received treatment for minor burns and breathing difficulties.
Explosion risk prompts evacuation
The fire broke out shortly after 8 a.m. at a recycling facility at the intersection of Megaridos and Chiou streets, rapidly spreading and producing dense black smoke that covered the surrounding area.
Authorities said a truck carrying a propane tank remained inside the premises, raising concerns over a possible explosion.
Emergency alerts were issued through Greece's 112 system, urging residents in the area to evacuate as a precaution.
Large firefighting operation underway
Around 75 firefighters supported by 20 fire engines, a water-dropping helicopter and municipal water tankers were deployed to contain the blaze, which completely destroyed the factory.
The Fire Department's arson investigation unit has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
