Severe weather “ERMINIO” kills one and causes major damage in Attica
One person has died and widespread damage was reported in Attica as the severe weather system “ERMINIO” swept across Greece.
Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gale-force winds hit the region after 11 p.m. Wednesday, causing flooding and disruption in areas including Nea Makri, Stamata, Dionysos, Rafina, and Pikermi, as well as on islands such as Poros and Rhodes.
The victim, a 50-year-old Polish man, was found dead under a vehicle in Nea Makri after fast-moving floodwaters swept him away while leaving his basement apartment. He was recovered by fire service personnel but died despite being taken to hospital.
Eastern Attica, particularly around Penteli, experienced the most severe effects. The Fire Service received 483 calls in Attica alone by early Thursday, including reports of fallen trees, flooding, hazardous objects, and rescues.
Across the country, 674 emergency calls were logged between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
