Three dead, two missing in factory fire in Tırhala
Three people were found dead after a large fire broke out early on Tuesday at a food processing factory in the city of Tırhala (Trikala), authorities said.
The blaze erupted shortly before 4 a.m. while 13 people were inside the facility, according to the fire brigade. Five workers were taken to hospital, while two others remain unaccounted for. Earlier reports had said five people were missing.
According to trikalaola.gr, the police and fire officials said initial reports indicated a strong explosion was heard before the fire spread through the factory. Workers told authorities the blast appeared to originate from an area where there were no liquefied gas cylinders, which are stored in the basement.
An investigation into the cause of the fire and explosion will begin after firefighting operations are completed. A public prosecutor was present at the scene.
