Fire subsides aboard vehicle ferry north of Mykonos
A fire aboard the vehicle ferry Blue Carrier 2 has subsided after breaking out in one of the ship’s vehicle decks north of Mykonos on Friday morning and spreading to other areas.
The main priority is now to stabilize the vessel and create safe conditions for a specialized rescue team to enter, according to the company overseeing the firefighting operation.
The ship has developed a slight list to starboard because of the large quantities of water used to cool its steel plates and reduce high temperatures inside. The next step will be to pump out the water to improve its stability.
A specialized team will then inspect the interior and assess the damage before determining the next steps.
The tugboat Aigaion Pelagos continues firefighting and cooling operations.
The 29 people on board, including 28 crew members and a truck driver, abandoned the vessel safely and were taken to Tinos. All are in good health.
The ferry was carrying 166 trucks and 29 passenger vehicles.
The fire reportedly started in a truck located in garage number 4. The ship was sailing 4.5 nautical miles north of Mykonos when the fire broke out at 8.57 am.
