Summer tax inspections lead to fines, closures at tourist hotspots

Greece’s tax authority (AADE) has intensified inspections at popular tourist destinations, issuing fines and temporary closures to businesses violating tax rules.

On Mykonos, a folk art shop was fined €13,000 and shut for two days after failing to issue receipts for €107,000 in sales during 2021-2022, withholding €26,000 in VAT.

An Italian restaurant on the island was fined €2,000 and closed for 48 hours for failing to issue a €28,000 receipt plus €4,000 VAT.

According to Kathimerini similar penalties have been imposed on catering businesses in Astypalea, Heraklion, Hania, and Lesvos.

AADE has also found violations among vehicle and motorcycle rental companies. Four businesses in Paros and two in Milos were found not to have issued receipts totaling €18,000, plus €4,350 in VAT, leading to fines and other sanctions.

The stepped-up inspections come at the peak of the summer tourism season, with authorities signaling zero tolerance for tax evasion.
