Parliament approves taxation and support measures bill
The Greek Parliament on Friday passed a draft law tabled by the National Economy and Finance Ministry titled “Taxation Reform for the Demographic Issue and the Middle Class – Support Measures for Society and the Economy.”
The bill was approved in plenary by a majority following a roll-call vote requested by the ruling New Democracy party.
In the vote on the bill in principle, 160 deputies supported it, 84 voted against, and 49 declared “present,” with 293 deputies taking part. Most of the bill’s individual articles were backed by an even wider margin than the overall vote.
During the final vote, 289 deputies participated, with 160 in favor, 71 opposed, and 58 declaring “present.”
Broad parliamentary support
Sources at the National Economy and Finance Ministry said the legislation enjoyed broad approval across Parliament. Of the bill’s 47 articles, 37 received more than 200 votes, while several secured over 250 votes, according to the same sources.
“The results confirm that this is a comprehensive reform of strong social and developmental character,” they noted.
The package of tax relief measures focusing on families with children and young people received 214 votes. A reduction in pre-determined taxable income factors (tekmiria) was backed by 248 deputies, while the new 25% tax rate on rental income was approved by 215.
“These provisions form the backbone of the tax reform, easing the burden on households, promoting tax fairness, and supporting the younger generation,” ministry sources said.
Measures for regional growth
The government’s initiatives to strengthen Greece’s regions also drew wide support. The gradual abolition of the ENFIA property tax in villages with up to 1,500 residents (1,700 in border areas) and a 30% VAT reduction on islands each received 261 votes.
“These measures have a strong regional dimension, supporting rural Greece, encouraging young people to remain in their hometowns, and providing room for growth in island communities,” the sources added.
A regulation increasing wages for security forces — including police, port, and fire service personnel — also passed with broad support, receiving 254 votes.
