Parliament approves 35-year concession for Egnatia Odos
Parliament on Wednesday ratified the 35-year concession of Egnatia Odos and three vertical road axes, with Infrastructure & Transport Minister Christos Dimas and Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos presenting the expected benefits of the agreement.
The concession covers the funding, operation, maintenance and commercial exploitation of the motorway, which links Igoumenitsa on Greece’s west coast to Kipi at the eastern border, along with three connecting routes. Dimas described the deal as “one of the most significant concessions of recent years,” noting it fulfils a long-pending obligation under the 2011 memorandum and enables the modernization of a key national infrastructure asset.
Under the agreement, the concessionaire will pay nearly €1.3 billion toward reducing public debt and will be responsible for upgrading toll systems, repairing core sections, modernizing tunnels, and constructing 16 car service stations and 12 rest areas.
The tender was conducted by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, now incorporated into Growthfund, Greece’s National Fund.
The concession contract, signed in March 2024 with GEK Terna–Egis Project, covers the 658-km Egnatia Odos and the vertical axes of Siatista–Ieropigi/Krystallopigi, Thessaloniki–Serres–Promachonas, and Halastra–Evzoni, along with adjacent areas.
