Turkish-born politician Prof. Vezhdi Rashidov elected to the post of Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament for the first time in Bulgarian history.

Citizens for the European Future of Bulgaria (GERB) and Union of Democratic Forces (SDS) parties Alliance Member of Parliament Prof. Vezhdi Rashidov was elected as the Chairman of the 48th term Assembly.

The new parliament speaker is the son of the late Turkish singer Kadriye Latifova, whose songs are loved and listened to in Western Thrace. He is also well known as one of the most famous sculptor of Bulgaria.

239 of the deputies present in the parliament voted for the election of the chairman who will lead the parliament in the new period. 139 voted for Vejdi Raşidov to be elected as the Speaker of the Parliament, while 73 voted no.

The oldest politician in the Bulgarian Parliament, 70-year-old Rashidov, of Turkish descent, served as the Minister of Culture between 2009-2013 and 2014-2017.
