Greek Culture Ministry Secretary General resigns amid planning office corruption scandal fallout

George Didaskalou, Secretary General of Greece’s Ministry of Culture, has resigned from his post amid ongoing political scrutiny surrounding an alleged corruption network operating within urban planning offices across the country.

His resignation comes just days after Efthymios Bakogiannis, Secretary General for Spatial Planning and Urban Environment at the Ministry of Environment and Energy, stepped down on June 8, citing personal reasons.

The broader investigation centers on an alleged corruption ring within planning authorities. Prosecutors are examining accusations that include bribery, acceptance of bribes, breach of duty, money laundering, and influence peddling.

Six defendants who recently testified before judicial authorities have been placed in pre-trial detention, while the case continues to dominate Greece’s political agenda.

Responding to criticism from opposition parties in Parliament, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis described the departures as “two resignations for personal reasons” and urged political actors not to prejudge the outcome of the investigation.

“Do not rush to conclusions,” Marinakis said, adding that any further findings should be left to the judicial authorities. “Anything else, if it exists, should be left to justice.”

The corruption case remains under investigation and continues to fuel political debate across Greece.
