Kiwis expand global reach, production doubles in a decade
Greek kiwis have emerged as a major exportable fruit, with production doubling over the last ten years and new markets, including Vietnam, joining the export map.
Official data from the Ministry of Rural Development and Food show domestic kiwi production rising from 171,719 tons in 2014 to 341,998 tons in 2024.
The increase is attributed to new plantings, improved cultivation practices, and better organisation in traditional growing regions.
Northern Greece remains the heart of kiwi cultivation. Between 2014 and 2024, Central Macedonia produced 1,402,269 tons, followed by Epirus with 720,800 tons and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace with 697,501 tons.
Investments in modern infrastructure and quality control have strengthened these regions’ export capacity.
Spyros Protopsaltis, Secretary General of the Ministry speaking to AMNA said kiwis have become “one of the strongest assets in Greek fresh fruit production,” highlighting the systematic growth in quality and organisation over the decade.
By February 13, 2026, approximately 154,069 tons of Greek kiwis had been exported. Top destinations included Spain (21,421 tons), the United States (18,259 tons), Italy (15,031 tons), Brazil (13,936 tons) and Poland (8,592 tons).
UN Comtrade data for 2024 place Greece third globally in kiwi export value, underscoring its strong position and international reputation for quality.
