Greek Minority in Albania a priority, says Gerapetritis
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis emphasized the protection of the Greek minority in Albania as a “top priority” during talks with his Albanian counterpart, Igli Hasani, in Athens on Tuesday. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, addressing minority rights, and enhancing regional cooperation.
Gerapetritis highlighted the importance of the Greek minority’s welfare in Albania and, in parallel, the Albanian community in Greece. He stressed that both communities can serve as “bridges of understanding” and help foster deeper ties between the two nations.
“This is an opportunity to give fresh momentum to our relations,” Gerapetritis stated, praising Hasani’s Greek heritage and fluency in the language. He also reaffirmed Greece’s full support for Albania’s European Union accession path, noting that regional integration is essential for lasting stability in the Western Balkans.
The two ministers also discussed issues of regional security, connectivity, investment, and trade. Gerapetritis underscored the need for strong partnerships in the face of global instability.
Hasani, on his first official visit to Athens since taking office, echoed the call for stronger cooperation, emphasizing shared goals within a united Europe. He noted that bilateral trade reached €910 million in 2024 and expressed optimism that it will surpass €1 billion in 2025.
“The time is right for a positive and constructive approach,” Hasani said, calling for a long-term partnership based on mutual strategic interests.
