Zeybek: This decision is a blow to the fundamental rights of our minority
Xanthi MP Hüseyin Zeybek stated that the closure decision taken by the Rodopi Civil Court of First Instance is a clear attack on democratic rights and freedoms.
In his press statement regarding the closure of the Western Thrace Fenerbahce Sports and Culture Association, Zeybek stated that the decision was taken on the grounds that the phrase "Western Thrace" in the name of the association was against the national interests of Greece and that he strongly condemned this decision.
Zeybek emphasised that this decision not only targets a sports association but also is a blow to the fundamental rights of the minority in Western Thrace.

"With the decision taken by the Rodopi Civil Court of First Instance on 28 May 2024, it was decided to close the Western Thrace Fenerbahce Sports and Culture Association. This decision was taken on the grounds that the phrase "Western Thrace" in the name of the association is against the national interests of Greece. I strongly condemn this decision.
The Western Thrace Fenerbahce Sports and Culture Association is active in the region with the aim of strengthening social solidarity by organising sports and cultural activities. This decision to close down the association is a clear attack on the democratic rights and freedoms of the minority in Western Thrace.
Such a decision not only targets a sports association, but is also a blow to the fundamental rights of the minority in Western Thrace. The closure of associations on the basis of their names is unacceptable in modern democratic societies and is contrary to the principles of the rule of law."
