Zeybek questions Eldorado Gold’s mining plans in Thrace

Independent MP for İskeçe (Xanthi) Hüseyin Zeybek has submitted a parliamentary question to Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy over Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold’s activities and exploration plans in Thrace.

In his September 23 question, Zeybek referred to reports concerning Eldorado Gold’s subsidiary Thracean Mining (Metalleia Thrakis), which holds mining rights and interests related to gold deposits in Perama and Sapes, and asked whether the government is aware of plans to develop a broader mining district in the region.

The parliamentary intervention comes as Eldorado Gold continues to advance its Perama Hill project while conducting exploration and evaluation work around Sapes.

Perama Hill identified as next major project
Eldorado Gold's own 2026 investor materials identify Perama Hill in Thrace as a key growth project and describe it as the company’s expected next mine after Skouries.

The company says Perama Hill is an open-pit gold-silver project with an estimated initial mine life of eight years based on current reserves. An Environmental Impact Assessment was submitted to Greek authorities in December 2025, while feasibility, technical and consultation processes remain underway.

Eldorado Gold has also said that exploration potential in the wider Thrace region could support further growth. Its corporate documents identify the Sapes property, located about 14 kilometers northeast of Perama Hill, as another area under review for future technical, economic, permitting, social and environmental work.

Zeybek asks whether projects could form a wider mining district
Zeybek's parliamentary question refers to company presentations and media reports suggesting that Perama and the Sapes area could be considered together in the context of broader exploration and mining development in Thrace.

According to the MP, company presentations have referred to multiple mineral systems in the region with potential for gold and copper mineralization, as well as areas that have not yet been fully explored.

Zeybek asked the government whether it has information about Eldorado Gold and its subsidiaries pursuing a broader mining district in Thrace and whether such a project would receive government approval.

The MP also asked what measures the Environment and Energy Ministry would take in response to objections from local authorities, organizations, civil society groups and residents concerning mining activities in the region.

Exploration continues in Sapes
Eldorado Gold's subsidiary says exploration work in the Perama and Sapes areas is continuing.

The company reported in February that its 2026 objectives included geotechnical and geophysical studies in the Sapes and Perama areas. It also said its focus was shifting toward the Perama project and geological exploration in Sapes following progress at its Skouries project in Halkidiki.

The company has separately described the wider Thrace region as having exploration potential that could support future growth.

Government response awaited
Zeybek is seeking clarification from the government on the scale of Eldorado Gold's plans, the possibility of expanding mining activity across a wider part of Thrace and the government's position on such development.

The parliamentary question does not itself establish that a broader mining district has been approved or will necessarily be created. Eldorado Gold's publicly available documents confirm ongoing development work at Perama Hill and exploration activity in the Sapes area, but a final government decision on a wider regional mining district was not identified in the sources reviewed.

Zeybek also called for the government to provide the public with information about the company's plans and the potential implications for local communities.
