Zeybek says no concrete solution offered for Yassıköy toll queues

İskeçe independent MP Hüseyin Zeybek has criticised the response to his parliamentary question over long vehicle queues and road safety concerns at the Yassıköy toll station on the Egnatia Motorway.

İskeçe independent MP Hüseyin Zeybek has criticised the response he received to a parliamentary question concerning recurring traffic congestion and safety concerns at the Yassıköy (Iasmos) toll station, arguing that it does not provide concrete measures to address the problem.

Zeybek submitted his parliamentary question on September 1, asking the government to take immediate measures over what he described as kilometre-long queues at the toll station, particularly during the summer months. He also raised concerns about the safety risks created by heavy traffic on the Egnatia Motorway.

ZEYBEK RECALLS 2025 FATAL CRASH
In his intervention, Zeybek referred to a fatal traffic accident at the Yassıköy toll station in August 2025 in which three people were killed. He argued that the long queues that develop during periods of heavy traffic create additional risks for motorists.

Zeybek also asked whether the government was considering abolishing or replacing the motorway's mainline toll stations with a different system in order to reduce congestion, delays and potential safety risks. His September 1 parliamentary question was registered under protocol number 7974.

AUTHORITIES SAY EXTRA LANE IS ACTIVATED DURING PEAK TRAFFIC
According to the response cited by Zeybek, the Yassıköy mainline toll station operates with three lanes under normal traffic conditions.

During periods of particularly heavy traffic, an additional reversible lane is activated, bringing the total number of operating lanes to four. The response states that the simultaneous arrival of a large number of vehicles can cause temporary congestion and longer waiting times.

It further says that such delays are not attributable to inadequate operation or malfunction of the toll station, nor to a failure to implement the prescribed traffic-management procedures.

ZEYBEK SAYS RESPONSE DOES NOT ADDRESS CORE PROBLEM
Zeybek argued that the response does not address the underlying problem at the toll station. He said it does not set out specific measures to improve driver safety or prevent the recurrence of lengthy queues.

He also said his question about potentially abolishing or replacing the mainline toll stations was not substantively addressed.

The MP further argued that the response from the government and the concessionaire operating the Egnatia Motorway does not provide sufficient information on how recurring congestion at Yassıköy will be prevented.

The issue has also been raised by other MPs in recent months. In September, Rhodope MP Özgür Ferhat separately called for measures over long queues at the Yassıköy toll station, citing congestion and road-safety concerns.
